Although
the Basques were converted late to Catholicism (The
Basque Country was considered completely converted
in the late 15th century) nothing has become such an
important part of the Basque mentality and culture
as the Catholic Church. In every little village, even
those of 10 or 11 house, a church can be seen at the
center of it, along with a cemetary and a pilota court
or fronton. Almost every secular celebration (town
festival) actually has its roots in the church and
usually is a celebration of the town's patron saint.
Pictured here you see the
Zapurrak,
who although dressed in costumes of the napoleonic
armies, are a remnant of pagan times as someone who
stands guard at religious festivals to keep the evil
spirits away.
